Junctionla School Opening - July 2008

December 11, 2008

(GWIN) - Gwin Elementary ESL students and their families often congregate at Gwin for a special days called “Family Days.”   The most recent monthly event was a fundraiser which raised more than $100.00 for the war-torn African country, Sierra Leone.

Katie Collins, a Gwin ESL teacher, has a sister currently living in Sierra Leone.  That sister has spearheaded a fundraising effort, “Schools for Salone,” to build a school in Sierra Leone’s Niagorehun Village.  The school was badly damaged from a decade long war that ended in 2002 and remains in need of rebuilding.  Estimated rebuilding costs are upward of $30,000.

Aside from fundraising efforts which included school supplies, Gwin’s most recent “Family Day” included a tree-lighting ceremony, musical performances, video clips and snacks.

If you would like to donate to this school, please make your check payable to Schools for Salone, indicate Niagorehun Project on the memo line (to insure that the funds are directed to our project) and mail to Schools for Salone/ 9215 40th Ave NE/ Seattle, WA 98115.
