Sierra Leone Fabrics

Support Schools for Salone by purchasing
a custom sewn Tote Bag
quilted from Sierra Leonean fabrics.

These brightly colored, durable bags are sewn by volunteers in the United States.  They feature cotton fabrics commonly worn in Sierra Leone, Warm & Natural batting and all cotton lining.  They have shoulder length straps and additional pockets inside and out.

Schools for Salone offers 2 different styles:
one made from printed fabrics and one made from hand died fabrics know in Sierra Leone as Gara Cloth, because of the plant source of one of the dyes. (Learn more about Gara Cloth)

The design of the Tote Bags was taken from a bag that Cindy Nofziger, our Schools for Salone Executive Director, brought back from Africa on one of her visits years ago.  Peggy Garber, Schools for Salone Web Master and local sewing teacher, developed a pattern and instructions for making the them.
