Opening Ceremonies - March 27, 2009
Cindy Nofziger, Executive Director of Schools for Salone, traveled to Sierra Leone with her son Michael for the Opening Ceremonies of the new Abigail D. Butscher Primary School in Calaba Town, in the East End of Freetown, made possible with funding from The Madieu Williams Foundation.
First stop was a meeting with Madieu Williams and the US Ambassador to Sierra Leone, June Carter Perry, in Freetown.
Then they were off to the Opening Ceremonies. The day was full of events. The ladies of Calaba Town began cooking early in the morning. Dignitaries arrived for a tour of the new school, built in just over 2 months under the careful supervision of Masanga Children's Fund on-site manager, Lanasana Bayon. The women and Children of the community danced and sang. After the ceremonies, the speeches and the ribbon cutting, a feast was enjoyed by all. The day closed with Madieu Williams, local soccer players and people of the community at the playfield.
