Lungi village is located south of Bo, just west of Koribundu junction. This is a village that was devastated by the civil war between 1992 and 2002. Rebels occupied it and neighboring villages, terrorizing citizens there and disrupting education for a generation of students. After the war, the community rebuilt as best it could. The parents today, many of whom did not get to go to school, are passionate about giving their own children a better opportunity.
Lungi's current school consists of two tiny mud, stick and thatch structures for 6 teachers and 6 classes, serving nearly 200 students. The school leaks terribly during the rainy season, and there are no latrines for the children.
Students at Foothill Technology High School in Ventura, CA, have joined together for their senior year community service Hero Project and committed to raise $50,000 to build a new school for Lungi. The kids are planning concerts, car washes, t-shirt and calendar sales, not to mention setting up programs at service clubs, their parents' employers and much more. On October 2nd, they will had an information table at the Oxnard Multi-Cultural Festival. On November 13, 2010 they held a carwash. On December 4, 2010 they held a benefit concert.

In June 2010, literature instructor from Foothill Technology High School, Melissa Wantz, her daughter Megan and her history instructor colleague Cherie Eulau traveled to Sierra Leone and visited the village to meet with the community about their needs for a school. They were overwhelmed by the friendliness and gratitude of the people and by the hope in the eyes of the young school children. The community is determined to do whatever they can to see their children educated in a school that is sound, safe and comfortable.

You can help Foothill Technology High School seniors reach their goal of $50,000 to make the dreams of an entire village and its 200 students into a reality. Your donation will provide a permanent school building, with wooden furniture and bathrooms for the children. The community of Lungi has secured the land and is ready to start building as soon as the money is raised.
Donate today to "Lungi School" at Schools for Salone. 100% of your donation will be placed in a restricted funds account to be used solely for the school in Lungi. All of it is tax deductible, and you will be mailed a receipt. We will also keep you updated about the progress with an e-newsletter if you like.

Salone Stories directly benefit Lungi School

In Nov. 2009, Melissa Wantz began "Project Hello: Notes from the Edge of the World" a project for her students and high school students in Freetown, Sierra Leone, to correspond via an online social network called a ning. That correspondence resulted a storybook of traditional Sierra Leone folktales from five local languages translated into English. Students in Sierra Leone and California wrote Japanese style Haiku poems to accompany each story. Illustrations are by Freetown artist Julius Parker, aka "Choema."
